Kemira’s Research & Development group has an immediate opening for the position of Research/Senior Research Scientist for the Paper Fiber & Wet-End Chemistry Group located in the R&D Center in Atlanta, Georgia.   This position reports to the Fiber & Wet-End Chemistry Manager. This role is responsible for providing product applications and development support of process and functional chemicals for the tissue specialty product line via lab-based applications and new product development and testing. Other responsibilities include leading multiple projects in the area of tissue specialty chemicals, including creping adhesives, release aids and modifiers, softeners/debonders and absorbency aids, as well as supporting implementation of global R&D initiatives in NA papermaking market, participating in project planning, carrying out independent work, assisting in resolution of product performance or production issues and maintaining excellent communication with business stakeholders throughout the course of requested work.

What you need: 

  • B.S. degree in Chemistry or related field with 8-10 yrs. experience; M.S. degree with 6-8 yrs. experience; Ph.D. with 4-6 yrs. experience
  • Industrial experience with a paper chemicals supplier or tissue manufacturer in the development of tissue chemicals and chemical applications
  • Hands-on experience with some or all of the following: bench-scale simulated pulp and paper applications testing, wet chemistry, analysis techniques, product formulations, pulp preparation, handsheet making and testing, and other studies in the areas of tissue specialties, deposit control, sizing, strength and retention and drainage
  • Project management and multi-project prioritization experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong problem solving ability
  • Ability to understand equipment operation, maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Experience in routinely updating data files and writing reports with conclusions and recommendations
  • Familiarity with intellectual property processes desired
